Courses - Parent & Child Bushcraft Course
"...I don’t know where to start to thank you enough for the most fantastic two days in the woods. When I asked the children on the way home in the car what was the best bit, and what they had enjoyed the most , their resounding answer was ALL of it! You made us feel so welcome and your knowledge and understanding of what we wanted and what you taught us all was outstanding, I can’t thank you enough..."
The Green School Parent & Child Bushcraft course is designed to allow you quality time outdoors whilst, learning new skills and having an adventure together.
We start by teaching you some of the fundamental skills that you need to have for the outdoors, and we adopt a very much "hands-on" approach: where every student is encouraged to participate. You are encouraged to work together to accomplish tasks like building your own shelter and cooking a meal on your own fire. Our instructors are on-hand at every step to guide, encourage and support you as you learn. Our emphasis is on having fun, enjoying yourself and building self-confidence, so please don't come expecting a "boot camp" approach.
As always, there is a strong focus on safety, teaching students the the most effective, straight-forward ways to many achieve tasks, as very often we have found these to be the best in situations where "the chips are down"!
A good deal of the course takes place in our outdoor classroom (aka Rod's "living room"), which is covered in case of bad weather. If we get a sudden squall as can happen in the Chilterns, we have a large covered barn to work in also :-)
Some of the topics that we will look to cover will include:-
- Getting dressed for & getting to grips with being outdoors
- Simple methods of fire lighting
- Simple cooking and fire management
- Safe use of cutting tools
- Making Shelter - designs & building (practical)
- Setting up camp & managing yourself outdoors
- Finding water & methods of purification
- Simple knots and lashings
- Simple Spoon Making
- Tree & Plant ID walk
- The Night Sky - weather permitting!
- Torchlit walk through the woods - weather permitting
